The fate of empires

Great documentary, “The Four Horsemen” by Ross Ashcroft [“Systemfel som hotar världen”@Public Swedish TV – might be blocked for abroad viewing…?] on the state of the modern world, based on Sir John Glubb’s paper with the same name.

According to Sir John, any civilization or empire (nation based or in business) will go thru these six stages:

  • The Age of Pioneers (outburst)
  • The Age of Conquests
  • The Age of Commerce
  • The Age of Affluence
  • The Age of Intellect
  • The Age of Decadence

For some reason, discussions such as this one (on the difference between a Use Case and a User Story) makes me think we’ve reached that final stage in our business… 🙂 During the 80ies, one similar hot topic for debate was about “colon alignment” in code – it seems that we at least managed to raise the level of abstraction a bit over the past 30 years… I guess it’s safe to say that our colons nowdays are fully aligned…:-)
