Computer Scientists discover nature’s tendency to produce modular systems

Hod Lipson and team at Cornell University have used simulation and genetic algorithms to prove that modular systems evolve naturally as soon as the cost of maintaining the interconnectedness of the system is taken into account (in addition to the functionality).

For an old hacker, it’s nice to see that even mother nature recognizes the value and benefits of modularity: all the desirable *-abilities we strive for in systems and software development:

– maintainability

– reusablity

– testability

– undestandability

– extensibility

(Thanks to Dave B. for the pointer!)
